David vs. Goliath: Upsets of the Week

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a comparable level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

A delicate question that I would like to address today is that some of the results featured in our weekly hit list may be a product of cheating. In fact, a few GMs have expressed their opinion that Borislav Ivanov's recent performance was too good to be true for a players of his level. However, presumption of innocence is still in place, so his games haven't been removed from the top-10.

Top-10 upsets:

Bohak (2068) - Gunsek (1603), 0-1, 465 points
Spelec (2066) - Murko (1634), 0-1, 432 points
Kozul (2638) - Ivanov (2227), 0-1, 411 points
Kukurin (1802) - Babic (2177), 1-0, 375 points
Murk0 (1634) - Tolic (1976), 1-0, 342 points
Ivanov (2227) - Kurajica (2565), 1-0, 338 points
Kevlishvili (1941) - Mamejarova (2277), 1-0, 336 points
Ivanov (2227) - Zelcic (2560), 1-0, 323 points
Senders (1967) - Pel (2288), 1-0, 321 points
Vogel (2166) - Plat (2483), 1-0, 317 points

Average gap: 366; White won 7 games, Black won 3 games

The Russian Rapid Grand Prix final was a knock-out event featuring 16 players. The prize fund was 1.4 million rubles (about $45,000); 1st prize - 320,000 rubles. It was held in Kirov on December 23-24.

The major sensation of the tournament was Vladislav Artemiev's performance. The 14-year old IM has one of the highest ratings on PlayChess and his own fan club on VKontakte.ru (the largest Russian social network), where his fans publish a lot of funny demotivators about their hero. In the Rapid Grand Prix final he defeated such a solid GM as Alexander Galkin, Russian Chess Champion Dmitry Andreikin and another chess prodigy - GM Sanan Sjugirov.

Here is a typical example of the art. The caption reads: "Vladik, thank you for the draw!"

1/8-final
Dreev (2748) - Kim (2068): 2-0
Andreikin (2712) - Dordzhieva (2091): 2-0
Savchenko (2634) - Ubiennykh (2329): 2-0
Sjugirov (2665) - Sukhareva (2248): 2-0
Stukopin (2517) - Ponkratov (2624): 1.5-0.5
Artemiev (2536) - Galkin (2623): 2-1*
Maletin (2595) - Yudin (2621): 2-1*
Shomoev (2488) - Smirnov (2627): 2-1*

*In the case of a tie an Armageddon game had to be played.

1/4-final
Dreev (2748) - Maletin (2595): 2-0
Shomoev (2488) - Savchenko (2634): 2-0
Artemiev (2536) - Andreikin (2712): 1.5-0.5
Sjugirov (2665) - Stukopin (2517): 2-1

1/2-final
Artemiev (2536) - Sjugirov (2665): 2-0
Dreev (2748) - Shomoev (2488): 1.5-0.5

Final

Dreev (2748) - Artemiev (2536) : 1.5-0.5

The World Mind Sport Games have been taking place since 2008 in five disciplines - chess, checkers, go, bridge and Chinese chess. This year's edition was held in Bejing, China. Many of the world's top players decided to take part in rapid, blitz and blindfold chess competitions. Here are the tournament results:

Rapid chess, men

http://www.pogonina.com/images//wsmg2012rapidm.jpg
The results of the rapid competition were sensational indeed - very few people expected Laurent Fressinet to win, while the reigning World Rapid Chess Champion Sergey Karjakin and such elite GMs as Levon Aronian and Vassily Ivanchuk finished close to the end of the tournament standings.

Rapid chess, women

The rapid women's event was hard-fought and went to Kateryna Lahno, who had a better tie-break score than Hou Yifan, Koneru Humpy and Anna Muzychuk. The World Women's Rapid Chess Champion Antoaneta Stefanova finished 7th.

Blitz chess, men

http://www.pogonina.com/images//wsmg2012blitzm.jpg
Sergey Karjakin won the blitz section convincingly with a 1.5 point lead over Hikaru Nakamura, who, in his own turn, managed to score 2 points more than the players who shared 3-5 places. World Blitz Chess Champion Alexander Grischuk was placed 7th.

Blitz chess, women

Ex-Women's World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk is known for her remarkable blitz skills. She won the competition ahead of Anna Muzychuk (who had the same number of points and a worse tie-break score).

Levon Aronian finally broke his string of upsetting performances and won the blindfold division. The main disappointment was Alexander Morozevich's result. After all, he is known as one of the best blindfold chess players in history.

The youngest Women's World Chess Champion (and already a former one) Hou Yifan achieved a great result in blindfold chess - 6/7. Her only loss came to Viktoria Cmilyte, who got silver. Anna Zatonskih finished at clear third.

As usual, the Snowdrops vs. Oldhands match took part in the Czech Republic, this time in Podebrady. This was the 5th match of this kind, and previously the score was equal: 2 matches ended in the favor of the veterans and 2 went to girls.

At first it seemed like the ladies will triumph again: they crushed their opponents 3.5-0.5 in the first round and won 2.5-1.5 in the second round. However, the chess legends decided not to give up that easily: they managed to equalize the score after round 7 and came on top in the decisive round 3-1! Overall, the Oldhands have scored 17 points and the Snowdrops - 15.
