I went down the gym earlier today to try and burn off some calories, picked up during all the drinking and eating I did during the Scottish champs.

The gym lights are extremely harsh and I was somewhat disgusted by the sight of this huge gut staring back at me and these unmistakable moobs. Admittedly I've lost quite a lot of weight since last year's nadir, where I was touching 16 stones, but at 14 and a half I'm still about 2 stones heavier than I'd like to be. Ironically I do a lot more exercise than I did when I was in my early twenties, but a slower metabolism rate means I'm nearly five stones heavier than I was then.

Even going running pretty much every night in Helensburgh, I still put on a lot of weight- really I should cut out drinking, beer in particular is terrible for putting on a gut- but it's all too tempting to have a couple of drinks after the game to wind down and relax.

More and more chess is becoming like a sport so there's no excuse for being out of shape. Look at Magnus Carlsen, he's super fit and able keep up an incredible level of energy for the entire game. Gawain Jones was telling me that when Levon Aronian turned up at the London Classic, he had a travelling masseuse and personal chef with him! That's the level of preparation you need to aspire to now, if you want to be successful.

After I left the gym I picked up some food in Morrisons.  As I waited at the checkout, I was shocked to see the extremely overweight lady behind me, waiting with what looked a very sugary rich range of coke cans, cakes etc.

No doubt she consumes more food herself than an entire class of starving Ethopian schoolchildren. We are facing an obesity epidemic in the West and it's easy to see why, with the aisles of junk food that litters our supermarkets these days.

Recently I came close to failing a test for type 2 Diabetes. That was a real wake up call, and not just those of us who compete professionally need to do something about their diet- we all need to do something.

Nice to read a humorous self-critical article.
