However, Carlsen replied with the Caro-Cann defence, which he hasn't employed since 2011 (Karjakin (2776) - Carlsen (2815), Bazna Kings, draw). On move 14 Vishy deviated from his recent 2013 game against Ding Liren (which Anand won) and played 14.0-0-0 instead of 14.Qe2. On move 16 Carlsen straightforwardly traded knights (Ne5, a novelty, technically speaking) and also quees one move later. White obtained a very minor advantage in the endgame due to having more space and better attacking prospects on the kingside, but it wasn't something sizeable. On move 25 a draw by repetition occurred. Replay the game Natalia referred to the first two games of the match as a "staring contest".
