Rapid chess, White to move

One of the key differences between average and really strong players is that the latter are more resilient and are able to come up with tricky ideas even in the most desperate situations. For example, in the position on the diagram above White resigned due to not being able to convey an attack on the opponent's king and losing even more material after Black's last move Qb2. Do you have a better suggestion?

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a similar level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

The Elite group is comprised of Leinier Dominguez Perez (2768, Cuba), Vassily Ivanchuk (2753, Ukraine), Wesley So (2731, Philippines), Francisco Vallejo (2700, Spain), Zoltan Almasi (2693, Hungary) and Lazaro Bruzon (2682, Cuba).

There is also a Premier group (10 GMs/IMs) and an Open tournament.

The Best Chess Games Played in 2013

Every year ChessPro publishes a hit list of the best chess games. It is compiled in the following way:

1. Every month IM Maxim Notkin chooses a short list of notable games and sends them over to some of the well-known GM/IMs. After their vote a monthly hit list if published.
2. At the end of the year the best of the best games are presented to the experts once again. They are asked to pick their top-10.
3. A final hit list is published by ChessPro after collecting all the scores from all the experts.
