AVS team (left): Stefanova, Muzychuk A, Pogonina, Savina (Muzychuk M and Shadrina are missing)

After a dramatic last round (SpbChess won against Giprorechtrans to clinch the gold medal, ShSM lost to Chigorin Club) AVS ended up with a bronze medal. Nothing exceptional for the clear rating favorites, but a success given the absolutely terrible start.

Natalia Pogonina scored +4 -1 =1 with a 2567 performance. 1st place on her board and 3rd place in the absolute standings. Here is the full table:

Natalia Pogonina taking advantage of the holiday resort in Dagomys

AVS has a rest day in the final round, so today in the evening we will find out what place the team will take.

Regarding Natalia's results:

1 (B) 0 2 0   WIM Paikidze, Nazi 2322
2 (B) = 3 25   WFM Gunina, Valentina 2457
3 (W) 1 3 50   IM Zaiatz, Elena 2391
4 (W) 1 3 62   GM Arakhamia-Grant, Ketevan 2447
5 (W) 1 3 70   WIM Bronnikova, Elizaveta 2271
6 (B) 1 4 75   WGM Iljushina, Olga 2356

Rating performance: 2567

That means two things: 1) Natalia has scored the best result on her board 2) she will be back in the 2500+ club in the May rating list

Also, today we will find out who the absolutely best performers (according to % of points gained) at the tournament are. So far the list looks the following way:

Place SNo. Title Name Team B.1 B.2 B.3 B.4 N %

Position from round 5 of the Russian Club Cup. Black has blocked White's pawns and seems to hang on. Or not? How did Natalia play here?

Games start at 3 p.m. Moscow time.

AVS is facing a strong team Economist from Natalia's home city Saratov. It's a must-win situation for AVS, let's hope they will make it!
Also, Natalia is playing against a good friend of hers, WGM Olga Iljushina with Black.

Update: Natalia created a positional masterpiece and won the 4th game in a row! AVS also won convincingly: 3-1!

Once again, two challenges: 1) guess the name of my opponent (tip: he became widely known in the West after the Aeroflot scandal last year) 2) guess who the players on the next board to us are (they are also grandmasters)

Games start at 3 p.m. Moscow time.

AVS is playing M. Chigorin Chess Club which doesn't have any match-points yet, and managed to score only 3 board points during the whole tournament. That is another indication of how tough the competition at Russian Club Cup is!

Update: Natalia won her game against Elizaveta Bronnikova. AVS also won 3.5-0.5

Ekaterina Atalik (2445) - Maria Muzychuk (2444)
White to move

The game ended in a draw after White played Ke4. But can one be sure it is the real evaluation of the position?

Tip: if you don't manage to work it out theoretically, try to play the position for both sides against a skilled player or a chess engine. It will definitely enhance your understanding of bishop endings.

AVS will be facing a very strong team SPb Chess Fed (ranked 2nd by average rating).

Update: Natalia Pogonina won her game against GM Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant in a nice positional style. AVS has beaten SPb Chess Fed 3-1 (2 wins, 2 draws), a very nice result!

Choosing the best way to victory

White to move

While in most chess puzzles there is only one solution, in regular games you often have to choose between a few promising continuations. This position is from round 3 of the Russian Club Cup. I could have won by sacrificing a rook:
35.Rd8! Bd8 36.Rd8 Rc1 37.Kg2 and Black has to give up a queen to avoid mate - Qd8 38.Nd8 Rd8 39.f6 Rg8 40.fg Rg7 41.Qe8 Rg8 42.Qe5 and White is winning. However, why calculate all this and risk blundering something, if it is possible to win much easier?

Can you see what move I played instead of 35.Rd8?

Something weird is going on: AVS, the rating favorite (with an average FIDE of over 2500) can't win a single match! Today they lost to Giprorechtrans 1.5-2.5 with the only win scored by Natalia Pogonina vs IM Elena Zaiats.
