by Candidate Master Peter Zhdanov

In this special weekly column we will be looking at the most unexpected upsets that happened last week. Players usually face opponents of a comparable level. Considerably less frequent are situations when a significantly lower-rated player succeeds in beating a much stronger adversary.

As compared to last week's top-10, this time the numbers have rampantly increased:

Maggiori (1700) Avila (2145), 1-0 445 points

Brizzi (1930) Della Morte (2346), 1-0 416 points

Bianchi (1903) Vasta (2307), 1-0; Elias (1885) De Paiva (2289), 1-0 404 points

Della Morte (2346) Fiora (1954), 0-1 392 points

Liu Dede (2387) Azarya (2005), 0-1 382 points

Sanchez (2544) Bartolini (2178), 0-1 366 points

Bacila (1621) Munteanu (1977), 1-0 356 points

Zalimben (1714) Lo Presti (2065), 1-0 351 points

Bacilia (1621) Vasile (1958), 1-0 337 points

Average difference: 385
White won 7 games; Black won 3 games

The reigning champion from St. Petersburg was paired against, using Kasparov's terminology, chess tourists - a team composed of IMs, FMs and even non-titled players! The match ended in a wipeout: 5.5-0.5

Meanwhile, on the other boards super grandmasters were fighting bitterly.

http://www.pogonina.com/images//364px-magnus_carlsen_%282012%29.jpg

After a dramatic race for gold between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana the Norwegian superstar came on top by winning the blitz tie-break 2-0. Fabiano Caruana achieved the largest rating gain and became #5 on the live rating list. Carlsen needed a last round win to beat Garry Kasparov's rating record, but the game was drawn. Levon Aronian and Sergey Karjakin performed slightly below expectations, while World Champion Viswanthan Anand had yet another disappointing tournament: he drew 9 games and lost one. Francisco Vallejo Pons predictably finished in last place.

Results (3-1-0 scoring system!)

1. Carlsen - 17
2. Caruana - 17 (lost blitz tie-break)
3. Aronian - 11
4. Karjakin - 10
5. Anand - 9
6. Vallejo - 6

Magnus Carlsen - Viswanathan Anand, 1-0
