A Queen Trapped in an Empty Hall - Round 4 Report

Round four was already a day of direct encounters between the favourites.
The top match between the main favourite India and the local young heroes, Hungary, was one of the most dramatic so far. After four hours the Hungarians were in the lead with 1,5-0,5 but the remaining two games went wrong for them and India won with 2,5-1,5. You can find out more in the interview with Kende Antal:
By defeating Romania with the same score Russia joined India in the lead. These are the only two teams with a perfect score and they will inevitably meet tomorrow.
Uzbekistan continues to deliver surprises by drawing again with a much higher rated team - this time with Canada 1.
The last match to end was Georgia - Ukraine. At the score of 1,5-1,5 the game Matviishen - Ghvamberia seemed to continue forever. On move 99 the white queen was trapped on an almost empty board and in a practically deserted playing hall, sealing Georgia's match win over their higher ranked opponents.
The brilliancy contest jury had a hard time choosing between two valuable third round games. In the end the Solomonic solution was taken to award two prizes for the same round.

As the tournament advances, matches become more leveled, increasing the probability of upsets. Since this is the second round of what we have baptized the "girl's day" we will take as a reference a match in which the girl's result had a big impact. Favorite 4 Ukraine had to conceal a 2-2 result to the modestly rated Uzbek team. The only win for Uzbekistan was scored on board three by the girl player Bakhora Abdusattorova.

FIDE Youth Chess Olympiad Hosted by Hungary Already Breaks Records

Only four months after the Chess Olympiad in Tromso where the greatest chess players of the world competed against each other it is already time to have a look at the best talents of the next generation. In December this year Hungary may organize a Chess Olympiad for the first time, the competition for youth aged under 16 years. The event takes place in the city of Győr and with more than a month to the start the organizers have already confirmed the entries of more participant nations than ever before at any Youth Chess Olympiad. It really seems that the best chess talents of all five continents will be present in Hungary between 12th-22nd December. Awarding the right of organization to Hungary is a clear sign of high international recognition of chess life in the country which is rightly confirmed by the fact that Judit Polgar (who has been leading the FIDE world women's rankings for more than 25 years) has agreed to be the face of the event representing talent and the Hungarian chess traditions all in one person or we could even say legend. By mentioning Judit Polgar let us not forget that after FIDE tightened on a rule that had existed earlier. Participation of girls is now guaranteed. In each team a maximum four of the five team members can be a boy.
The promo video of the Youth Chess Olympiad 2014 features Judit Polgar, Csaba Balogh,Olympic Silver medalist, Benjamin Gledura who was European Champion of his age group and Kata Karacsonyi who was the first to follow in the footsteps of Judit Polgar to win the National Championship, topping all boys in their age groups.
